Note the coincidence of European colonisation with the emergence of nation-states in the region.

Now go on ahead, y’know, complain, tell your problems to your neighbor, ask for help, ‘n watch him fly. An expanding collection of readings on rights here, as I revisit and rewrite. Of particular note is Werner Hamacher’s “The Right not to Use Rights,” available as a pdf - but not sure for how long. Likewise, Spivak’s “Righting Wrongs.”

And, only distantly related, a rather peculiar review of Holloway’s Change the World Without Taking Power by Negri. Peculiar understanding of sovereignty, that is (the Foucault he claims to understand would be shuddering in his grave) - among other things.

°The return of the hulks

While prison hulks were phased out in the mid-19th century, the Netherlands - unable to rent space on bankrupt islands in the Pacific - has modified the Australian system of offshore detention camps for undocumented migrants, and is building hulks moored off its docks. [Dateline video]
