°Say what?

November 22, 2006

Reading Jürgen Habermas’ “Opening up Fortress Europe” (via), I find little to be surprised by: suggestions of a “democratic deficit” were to be expected - as, I suppose, was his supposition that the failure to integrate migrants constitutes a threat to civil society.

°Police, military - protests that are/aren’t

November 18, 2006

As police in Melbourne prepare for their next exercise around the anti-g20 protests (see previous discussion) …

… this (below) is what is has been happening in Tonga these last few days. Australian and New Zealand troops are “are poised to enter the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa in a show of force today” - the Australian army has become a ’stabilisation’ force for nation-states in the region. After showing footage of mourning Tongans at the recent funeral of the King, and talking about how supportive of the monarchy all Tongans apparently were/are, it seems that such reports were rather overstated. Businesses owned in part or whole by the royal family have been targetted for burning and looting.

Eric says the comments thingy has been hiccuping - and according to others, burping as well. So, if comments aren’t appearing, they may either have disappeared or have been sent to moderation. Though, this has been a problem in the past, I thought it had been fixed, or had just gone away somehow, since I never really knew what the problem was in the first place.

“Immigrants arrested in the United States may be held indefinitely on suspicion of terrorism and may not challenge their imprisonment in civilian courts.” [+] [via]

“Migrants who have not taken out citizenship could be deported regardless of how long they have lived in Australia if they are jailed for more than a year. The High Court court ruled that Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone was legally entitled to cancel the visa of 32-year-old Melbourne man Stefan Nystrom on character grounds even though he had lived all but four weeks of his life in Australia.” [+]
