°Razor

October 8, 2007

We already know how it ends: badly. But here’s a screenshot from the upcoming Razor episode of Battlestar Galactica, extended flashback - yes, this is Cain and Six before the outbreak of war, playful, flirtatious even. (Razor is all about the women, and frakking, obviously. And what is it about Cain and Kendra? A wager that it’s Kendra at the other end of that table.) I assume the moment depicted in the above screenshot comes just before the hardening pain of ‘betrayal’ (?), and a bit more before the cut turns toward revenge of the most nasty kind; really, really nasty.

[Addenda: In case the point was too blunt: a razor slashes, yes? And I do think there is some deliberate bow to slash (or femslash, for the purists) at work here.]

  1. Looking forward to it, however I still need to catch up on S03 - it seems to be the case that it is on DVD in the UK, but not in North America? The fuck?

  2. Really, it’s not out in Canada? But what are you doing waiting around for dvds? And how could you possibly, after that cliffhanger? I think they’re just asking for people to …

  3. Yes… but it so inconvenient to download-and-burn! It doesn’t even seem to be the case that it is available in the US - Amazon says something like, “Not yet available for pre-order.” It could be that I’m a complete idiot and just can’t find it.

  4. No, I just checked and you’re right. How wierd.

You can always get it shipped from the UK, but wot with the dollar and all … But, really, there has to be some way you can watch some 15 or so hours of BSG before November 24th!! (Actually, since it’s a flashback, maybe it doesn’t really matter. The Pegasus episodes were in Season 2, right?)

  5. Pegasus episodes were S02, but there seems to be some suggestion that Razor may play into S04 - would like to see S03 before that, for obvious reasons.

Doesn’t the UK have its own DVD encoding region that is different from North America’s?

Simply, the lack of DVD distribution in North America is just plain ridiculous.

  6. Oh, and a season of full hour episodes would likely take, at most, two weeks to finish.

    Craig [October 11, 2007 @ 3:43 am]

  7. craig, you might be able to crack the region code on yr dvd player, although some are made with all the codes playable. see here.

    meanwhile, EXCITEMENT.

  8. And [Craig, avert your eyes!] a teaser for Season 4:

I did say about Starbuck, right?

  9. Thanks to J, I can now say that the bow is more explicit than “deliberate” … albeit heavily Freudo-noir in its depictions of the insurrectionary femme fatale, the Danveresque cruelty … and that knife (much more interesting than the needle, I thought).

    s0metim3s [December 9, 2007 @ 4:22 pm]

  10. yep, the knife is a twisted Cain prop. Psycho. But nothing much is done with it. Just some mad gimmick to frak people out. Kendra mainlines in her throat for oblivion. Deep. Cain goes for gory glory and gets lead to the head. But it strikes me that both of them found a better option than a fleet looking for earth (when they get there its gonna be grim).

  11. Oh, sure, we could argue about the respective ‘props’, but I’ll hazard that any argument will convey more about you and I than it does about the dramatic devices per se … But, hey, plotwise, both those things are the deferral of responsibility through toying with risk and numbness at the same time - though, the knife, unlike the needle, forms very particular relationships throughout the episode (Psycho is very definitely not the reference).

And, eck, how many bullets are there to how many heads? I counted three, maybe more.

But, earth, grim - sure. Though could it be grimmer than this?

    s0metim3s [December 9, 2007 @ 11:13 pm]

  12. Psycho - it would have been great if there had been some obvious Hitchcock tribute.

Cylon Raiders as the birds, hanging there threateningly; that fight between Husker/Adama and the Centurion as North by Northwest cliffhanging scene; Adama injured and laid up looking at a Rear Window style dradis like some sort of pervy old version of James Stewart…

There is some sort of story that there was an Apocalypse Now intro planed for Razor, but it was pulled. Deer Hunter might have worked better.
