At a time when it has become habitual to think of terror(ism) and human rights, or terror and democracy, as polar opposites, as completely distinct forms of politics, it bears some consideration that la Déclaration des droits de l’Homme et du citoyen was followed by la Terreur, that is, a war on (internal) enemies of the French revolution.

°Mourning - popular sovereignty

Alain excerpted a bit of an interview with Wendy Brown over at Long Sunday. In the interview, Brown remarks that “losing liberal democracy to neo-liberal political rationality” might be more analogous to “the loss of the hated but needed father” than it is to losing a loved one.

Besides reminding me of Tronti’s argument regarding democracy (which we discussed in the full version of this), it reminded me of Rebecca Comay’s essay “Dead Right: Hegel and the Terror” (South Atlantic Quarterly 103:2-3, 2004):
