°Helping them with their enquiries

January 18, 2007

In the wake of the protests against the G20 in Melbourne, and as numerous arrests continue to take place, police tonight released a series of photos, each one euphemistically labeled “person of interest.” Police are indeed perfecting their methods of surveillance and control, and well beyond the specific events. But special mention should go to those organisations and individuals - the International Socialist Organisation, Socialist Alternative and others - who once again, and quite predictably, displayed the worst aspects of a managerialism that quickly segued into a frenzied denunciation.

°Randomiser

A few random pickings before we head off to beaches northwards for a time. A hilarious piece of marketing drivel by Andrew Keen in the Weekly Standard, titled “Web 2.0 is Reminiscent of Marx”. (Metamute seems to be down at present, but their next volume is on web2.0 and related.) For those who can understand German, or read French, or those who just like to watch: a video of an interview with Hannah Arendt at Notiser från en ö. Audio of a lecture by Foucault, compiled at Continental Philosophy. And some Battlestar Galactica trifle on studios and really-existing monotheisms.

At the borders: In the Netherlands, the Stop Deportations Workgroup has been blockading what they refer to as deportation jails. In Italy, from January 17th, there will be a series of protests against the Bossi Fini law and for the closure of the camps. Service Workers in California protest against their union’s position on migration (via Bryan and Eric).

°Harmondsworth riots

November 30, 2006

UK Indymedia | MetaMute | SBS
Two days ago: “Britain’s largest immigration removal centre, Harmondsworth … is being run with a regime that is as strict as any high security prison, with those facing deportation victimised by staff and some strip-searched and temporarily locked in solitary confinement, according to the chief inspector of prisons.” | Indy update

°Horizontality, and the democratic horizon

November 22, 2006

In “Nothing is what democracy looks like,” Rodrigo Nunes offers some sceptical thoughts on the much-touted openness and horizontality of networks while, elsewhere, Dave Antagonism responds - “In the Wake… After the G20″ - to the debates about violence, the Arterial bloc, etc.

°Police, military - protests that are/aren’t

November 18, 2006

As police in Melbourne prepare for their next exercise around the anti-g20 protests (see previous discussion) …

… this (below) is what is has been happening in Tonga these last few days. Australian and New Zealand troops are “are poised to enter the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa in a show of force today” - the Australian army has become a ’stabilisation’ force for nation-states in the region. After showing footage of mourning Tongans at the recent funeral of the King, and talking about how supportive of the monarchy all Tongans apparently were/are, it seems that such reports were rather overstated. Businesses owned in part or whole by the royal family have been targetted for burning and looting.

Protests against la Migra’s “Operation Return to Sender” in Watsonville - more from Santa Cruz IMC. And some Los Angelinos reach beyond legalisation so as to organise around work. And, of particular blognote: Critical Spatial Practice, Subtopia and Squattercity. Also, below the fold, from Maps of War, the ebbs and flows of empire in the Middle East. Note the coincidence of European colonisation with the emergence of nation-states in the region.
