A couple of days ago, police in Sydney seized 20 of 41 photographs - of which the above is one - from Bill Henson’s exhibition, and are launching criminal proceedings under the Child Protection Act. A fuller account of the debates which have ensued at slackbastard.

I am not, however, interested in defending Henson’s work on the grounds that it’s ‘art not pornography’, as have most.

In the wake of the protests against the G20 in Melbourne, and as numerous arrests continue to take place, police tonight released a series of photos, each one euphemistically labeled “person of interest.” Police are indeed perfecting their methods of surveillance and control, and well beyond the specific events. But special mention should go to those organisations and individuals - the International Socialist Organisation, Socialist Alternative and others - who once again, and quite predictably, displayed the worst aspects of a managerialism that quickly segued into a frenzied denunciation.

The beloved and I went and saw Mysterious Skin, screening at the Melbourne Film Fest, the other day. Family First (aka Assemblies of God - born-again mecantilists) and the Australian Family Association (Opus Dei type Catholics) are currently seeking to have the film banned.
